Maria de Alvear’s opera tells the story of a soldier whose senses are tied up and numb from years of service. As the opera progresses he undoes his shackles and discovers his real self. The visual sense is our most dominant sense. By limiting visibility other senses are sharpened. The stage set consists of 740000 pieces of cotton string suspended from the ceiling of Festspielhaus Hellerau. This string-fog which reduces visibility for performers and audience to no more than 2m hightens the audience’s experience of music and movement. Shortlisted for Stage Production of the Year 2008 by Opernwelt.
supported by from Kunststiftung NRW and Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen
