Belmore Road

client: Eastbourne Homes, budget: £1.2 mio., project manager & landscape design: Plan Projects

–

The Devonshire Ward is Eastbournes most deprived neighbourhood. A lack of local employment and a transient population contrast a pleasant street scene characterised by Victorian terraces. Eastbourne Council and Eastbourne Homes have secured funding to roll out an unusual regeneration programme accross the ward. A range of backland sites and vacant retail parades are to be developed to diversify uses tempting owner-occupiers, micro-enterprises and creative businesses with low real estate costs and a high degree of amenity in close proximity to the beach. Jan Kattein Architects and Plan Projects were commissioned to prepare designs for a pilot-project on a complex Council-owned site in Belmore Road. Our design for a row of courtyard houses opening onto a new public space has been carefully conceived to positively engage with the street whilst maintaining a high degree of privacy for the occupants.
