Francis Road

Francis Road is a neighbourhood centre located just east off High Road Leyton. It was quite obvious that the retail outlets on the high street had seen better days. Vacancy rates were high, shopfronts and signage were in a poor state of repair, illegal front and side extensions occupied some of the retail forecourts. The poor condition of displays and limited opening hours were evidence of low business viability.
–
In a series of workshop sessions with year six pupils from Newport Primary School, we defined the local identity of the high street and invented new branding for local shops. Then we completed a comprehensive building façade and shopfront restoration programme combined with urban realm works, signage repair and urban lighting. Our works have helped to connect the high street with the local community, raising its value as a civic space in the eyes of the public.
–
Since the works completed, Albert & Francis, a pavement café with outside seating, a signage shop, a new dentist a new DIY shop and a contemporary photography gallery moved in. We are optimistic about the future of Francis Road and think that in the increasing anonymity of the city a neighbourhood centre is an invaluable asset for the local community.
